Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the beginning of its existence, the company made goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s in order to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers' products in order to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's global market share.
In the 1990s Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also redesigned its distribution system to better serve customers and boost profits. The company implemented a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and applied the same approach in its sales program. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example it has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. Discography
With a name like Asia one would think that the group would be prog queens and kings but they're actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The group was formed as four members and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without difficulties. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on them to give it. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distorted AOR which could sound completely wrong but actually works very well.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet format and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency on the drums, as well as an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was released as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001.
